Three Dozen Crashes Logged On Interstate Ramp Where Tanker Rolled Over

State transportation officials say a tanker crash that shut down a busy ramp on the city's Northwest side this week is among more than three dozen crashes on that ramp since it opened in late 2016. It鈥檚 also the ramp鈥檚 second tanker rollover.

Of the nearly 40 vehicles that drove off and crashed on the ramp from U.S. 33 east to 270 east, 87 percent came when drivers lost control. Ohio Department of Transportation spokeswoman Breanna Badanes says that speed was likely a factor in these accidents.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e headed from 33, which the speed limit is between 65 and 70 miles per hour, onto the interstate, where the speed limit is 65 miles, but you really have to slow down in between," Badanes said. "You can鈥檛 go interstate speeds on a ramp.鈥

Badanes says crashes are still relatively rare, given the 20,000 vehicles that use the ramp every day.

Over half of the crashes occurred when the ramp was wet.
